[Vhfcn-l] Physical

I have used the VA facility here in Ft Worth for many years. It's 23 miles
away but an easy twenty minute drive. My primary care physician is Indian
and is reliable and pleasant but I really never have brought any serious
condition to her to treat. I see her once a year to get my prescription for
Omeprazole (heart burn meds and Viagra). The facility is nice, airy, open
and well-staffed. On the other hand, I don't use them much so my annual
appointment/physical is only an opportunity to pass on information to the
VA. Last year's bout with prostate cancer was handled by my civilian Doctors
at one of the best Cancer treatment Centers in the nation, USMD Cancer,
Arlington, TX. (please don't advise me of the potential for 100% rating from
the VA, I'm aware of the benefit). In general, the VA gets a bad rap and in
some cases, well deserved but I'm relatively pleased with the VA. I don't
expect much and in turn, I don't get much.

I've had to use the Urgent care at the Manchester NH VAMC 3 times in 3
months and each time the treatment was quick and smooth. One of the visits
was for bad right leg pains. After an X-ray of both knees I got an
appointment 4 days later for my Primary Care doctor. I spent an hour with
her going over anything and everything. She ordered another blood panel plus
a swallow test due to some choking episodes along with referral to PT. Next
week I did the swallow test and went with the doctor to her office to watch
the films on her monitor. She explained what was happening and corrective
measures. I then had 4 PT visits in 4 weeks for my knee and leg and we found
I had several knots in my leg muscles that had pinched a nerve. In all 3
Urgent Care visits I was in a bed within 15 minutes of arrival.

However the hospital is in the news because a group of Whistle blowers have
come out to complain about unsanitary conditions in the day surgery and some
doctors just doing a copy and paste of old notes to look like they added in
new info. The trouble is back in the early 2000's they eliminated the
surgical suite which meant they got rid of in patient care. In fact the
state of NH is the only place that does not have a VAMC with an ER. The
administrator back about 2005 tried to shut down the ER completely and make
the entire hospital an 8 to 5 week day only operation. When we asked " What
are we supposed to do for care after hours" and the Administrator said "it's
not my responsibility to get Veterans insurance." We bitched to the news
media and we got an "Urgent Care Lite" which meant that no tests at all were
done after hours. In the last 6 years they built a new wing and added a
bunch of clinics and some are great. That being said I had a consult in for
a year and a half for Cardiac and never heard a thing. Recently I wore the
new version of a Halter Monitor for 2 weeks and the ticker appears to be
fine.
