I always looked up to and respected Matty. I think he was a true officer and a gentleman and a great friend. A great asset to HC4 and the Navy.

My first month (out of flight school) and arrival at NAS Lakehurst I was assigned to an “emergency” cruise aboard the USCG Westwind with Matty and Dale Hahn. The ship was to open a passage through the ice pack in Greenland that would allow emergency supplies to to be offloaded at Thule. We had 2 Bell helicopters assigned to us. The Westwind’s Captain was a four striper named Goettle. He stood 6’ 4” and weighed nearly 300 lbs! He always insisted on wanting to observe the ice pack surrounding his ship from the air. Needless to say, landings and takeoffs from the back of the ship were always a challenge. Thanks to Matty’s training, the Captain and I made “most” landings and takeoffs uneventful...Matty was a great OIC and Pilot and friend. The last time I saw him was at the Pensacola reunion a few years ago. I’ll miss him.

Thanks for letting us know.  I found a website for obituaries there and it had a method to send a condolence message.  There was nothing saying how it happened or by whom he was survived, however, as far as I could tell.
