In the Army a bronze oak leaf on an air medal equals an additional award. An Air Medal with four bronze oak leaf clusters represents 5 awards of the Air Medal. If you have a silver oak leaf it equals five clusters. For example if you have the AM with a silver OLC and one bronze OLC you would have have seven awards. In the Army the some airman amassed a hell of a lot of Air Medals and they went to numbers. An AM with a number 1 would equate to two AM. At least this is how I recall the Army system. Different services had different criteria and different Army units could have different criteria for awarding them.

Oak leafs on an air medal represents 5 medals. So, if you have a medal with
four oakleafs, you have 20 medals. In 1970 they changed that to a number.
