I recently finished reading two excellent books. One is

  Lucky 666: The Impossible Mission

It is about the crews of a B-17 in the early days of WW II. Two crew
members were recipients of the CMH on their last mission.

The other one is

Playing for Time: War on an Asiatic Fleet Destroyer

It is about the Asiatic fleet units in the first 3 months of WW II and
also an excellent read. In this book the author explains terms used at
the bottom of each page so you can figure out what they are talking about.

Now very interesting in both books is the real disgust they all show
for General MacArthur. They point out he is an egocentric that fought to
get everyone else knocked down below him. He caused a lot of losses by
his actions. It appears he was really pissed that he was not declared
"Supreme Allied Commander of the Pacific". The Navy wanted nothing to do
with his control because they had a different vision of what was
happening in the Pacific. MacArthur wanted the Navy to give all of it's
assets to him no matter the costs and the Army Air Force was treated
that way with MacArthur getting generals relieved of command if they did
not blindly do what ever he said.
