Hey Chris,
Interesting tins, thanks for posting it!
In a related experience; while in helicopter training, I heard about GIs
sometimes getting into unfriendly situations without a weapon. I decided
that was not for me, so I brought a Remington Rand 1911 that my father had
bought me when I was about 16 years old. I hid it inside a clock radio and
then into my duffel bag. After getting settled into my hooch at An Khe,
(478th Avn Co), I reassembled it and kept it hidden in my bunk. I soon
realized that there was no reason for my concern. I was issued an M-14
with mags and ammo which rested nearby in my hooch. Later under protest, I
had to exchange my M-14 for an M-16! But at any rate, I never had to go
unarmed. So not wanting to risk loosing my .45, I packed the slide and
barrel inside a 40mm casing, and the receiver in a #10 tin can, packed both
in a cardboard box, labeled it a Vietnamese lamp, (in case of an X-Ray),
and shipped it home. It arrived safely and was waiting for me when I got
there.
BTW: I missed TET also, my tour was from 7 Jan 68 to 7 Jan 69.
