Thanks very much for everyone's help and input Darrell,
I do think that John was the man we worked with. Right area, right time and thankfully he did make it out.
I am truly sorry that I and my wingman didn't get to meet him in person. Of all the units we worked with during my year, he made the biggest impression on us concerning total courage in the face of an almost impossible situation. It was just luck that we caught the call on the way back from Quan Tri to Evans. On the way to his location, we were getting hold of Snake unit guys that we knew whom didn't need the o.k. to help a unit, they would just come first and plead ignorance.
This one contact mission that stood out for us because as small birds it was the most that we got shot up in one mission. We knew John was surrounded probably by an excellent group of fighting NVA regulars. I think that between both birds, we took a total of 15 hits and normally we would only get hit by two or three rounds in a contact mission. I think that this was because we hadn't been in a contact where a unit was totally surrounded. No matter what way we turned on pull-out of our gun runs, they would hit us. We only had 4000 rounds of mini-gun, and 3000 rounds of 60 ammo and about 40 frags and 30 M-79 rounds, but we dumped it all before we left including our personal weapons. Met Snakes coming, when we had to call off target and that was the last info that we got. We got busy in our own A.O. again around Ripcord and area and never found out anything more of the unit.
I can still remember talking to him on FM; slow, cool, with no indication of worry about his situation even though we could hear much gunfire and other explosions. He just gave us steady instructions on each of our runs where to place our fire, where the enemy fire was coming from, and his location. It was worth knowing this man for just the fleeting moment we had.
Dm/26 may want to say more about this mission and his thoughts working with John.
Thanks, again. Tv/33

He told me a few times about the incident and the deep shit they were in. Mentioned the chopper support had saved their hides. Years ago I also had contact from a US chopper pilot (cannot remember the names) who landed to retrieve some dead and injured from the battlefield and the skids of his chopper landed on John’s boots. John gave him what for in his Australian vernacular (drawl). John had a very Australian tone in his voice and I am sure the blokes would have known they were dealing with an Aussie.

>> We were a “White Team” pair of scout loaches coming back from Quan Tri when we took an emergency radio transmission of a unit in heavy contact and at the time no support was available. We accepted the mission, Thunder 33 and Thunder 26; and engaged the enemy until we were exhausted. The guy was super on the radio with his Australian drawl, even though surrounded and in heavy contact this guy was as cool and calm as could be on the radio. We expended our 4000 rounds of mini-gun, 1500 rounds of M-60 and various frag grenades on the enemy around him. We had to leave to rearm and refuel, however; I think we took over 12 rounds between 26 and myself and could not return due to aircraft issues and availability. We called all units we knew to get support for this group on the way back, but we never found out if they made it or not. I would love to find out that guys’ name and meet him before we die if he is still living.
