Read that in a magazine years ago.  Think it was 4 wheel drive magazine.

Recently I heard on a news program that the original and now iconical shape
of the Jeep was due primarily to the fact that in the build up to World War
II efforts were made to utilize existing manufacturing facilities with only
the minimal changes needed to convert them to war time production.

In the case of the Jeep heavy machinery suitable to making washing machines
(and other simple, blocky shapes?) was adapted to turn out the needed body
parts, simple in shape and quick to retool for the purpose.

I did some "Googling" but found nothing to support this.

There was no discernable reason for including this anecdotal information
other than interest that I could see, nothing to be gained.

So I thought I would post it to the net and ask if any of you have ever
heard of this?
