I left Nam and active duty in March '68, a week after my 21st birthday. I was there for 18 months, 12 months as a crew chief. We were tasked with supporting the ARVN 9th Division. Ash and Trash, Assault, Medevac, 2800+ hours by my count. I know now that I stayed too long but I loved the work.Ms. Gorman has a theoretical knowledge of life. We have experience of it that she will never know. If she is lucky.

Subject: [Vhfcn-l] When perspective slaps you in the face......
I was watching the inauguration proceeding yesterday and when I first saw
Amanda Gorman, the youth poet laureate, come to the podium I thought wow,
she must be what? A junior high student?
And I shortly learned she is 22, maybe younger looking than most people her
age, but still.
The next thought was that I LEFT Viet Nam after a year and a half when I was
21. And I left active duty when I was 22.
Duh.
Not saying I felt old but...I certainly felt....I don't know....weathered?
Just saying.
